Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S Review & Rating Rating

Product Overview

Pros:
  • Dry traction
  • Light off-road terrain
  • Comfortable ride
Cons:
  • Deep mud and sand
Bottom Line: 4 / 5

It takes a special kind of tire to be able to handle driving off-road and through difficult and rugged terrain, as well as deliver a civilized ride on-road. The Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S is said to be that tire and it claims to have specific features combined with good durability to allow it to handle on an off road driving with ease.

We decided to put it to the test. We checked its traction, how it handles in normal weather and snow, its tread life and how comfortable it is when on the road to create a better picture of just how the ATS fares.

Traction

The Multistep Tread Technology that is advertised on the A/T-S series is meant to increase grip and rigidity on both dry and wet surfaces. It also features a self-cleaning action to get rid of mud quickly in off road settings.

Yokohama Geolandar ATS

We found that the tires worked brilliantly on just about all road surfaces. Even using vehicles such as 2-wheel drives, we noticed a fairly big traction difference and the tires hold their own on both good and bad driving surfaces alike.

On wet surfaces the tire’s interlocking pyramid sipes and multi-stepped grooves give the this model added traction, which is why we never had an issue with the tires sliding or giving way.

Cornering – Steering

Yokohama Geolandar ATSHandling with the Yokohama A/T-S is better than average and provides excellent control, even when going down less than suitable off roads tracks. Cornering in wet weather despite some aggressive driving habits works really well and there can certainly be no complaints in this regard.

Winter Handling

The Dual 3-D sipes and the zigzag configuration that the A/T-S model comes with is designed to provide extra grip on even the slipperiest of surfaces. Finding a tire that works all year round is not easy and even some of the more high quality tires that cost hundreds of dollars fall short.

What we found with these tires is that they do work really well in snowy and icy conditions. The tires had good grip up to a few inches of snow and there were no noticeable slides or skids on good surfaces. Going beyond a few inches and they might encounter problems – the narrow tread pattern can trap snow – but for mediocre driving conditions they were sufficient.

Ride Comfort – Road Noise

The A/T-S comes with five-pitch block variation and a narrow tread design to help reduce road noise and we certainly couldn’t pick up on any excessive decibels. They also offer a comfortable ride. Even when off road you could tell that any vibrations or uncomfortable spots were the cause of the terrain as opposed to the tires and they managed to reduce this as much as possible.

Tread Life

Yokohama Geolandar ATSNow we get to one of the bigger questions of all: just how long will the tires last?

There are many performance tires that don’t do so well in this category and this is especially true of those that are used off road due to the conditions they frequently drive in. What we found was that this particular model actually has a decent tread life, all things considered.

Getting around 50 – 60,000 miles out of them is not bad for a tire that often puts itself on some of the most rugged terrain and even though there are some exceptions (excessive tread wear around 25k in a few isolated cases), the tread life is very good indeed.

Warranty

The Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S tires come with either 50,000 mile warranty for 19″ & below, excluding E load, or 40,000 miles for all other models. This is actually about right for these tires and getting this amount of use out them considering their off road design shouldn’t cause any complaints.

The tires offer a high performance, off and on road experience. While we would not say they are the best all-terrain tire on the market, they leave a lot of other brands in their wake and are certainly in the top ten models for the price.
